Trump administration shaken by allegations of disclosing war plans against Houthi in a chat on Signal. Defence Secretary Hegseth denies it, but journalist Jeffrey Goldberg confirms his involvement and provides details of conversations between top US officials

A new scandal involves the Trump administration, with the so-called ‘chat gate’ at the centre. Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic, claimed he was inadvertently added to a secret chat on Signal where senior government officials, including Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and other members of the national security team, were discussing war plans against the Houthis in Yemen.

Hegseth strongly denied the allegations, telling reporters that “no one was messaging war plans”, but Goldberg claims otherwise. In an interview with CNN, he reiterated that Hegseth had allegedly published operational details of the upcoming attacks, including sensitive information such as targets and timing. The journalist also described exchanges between top US officials in which derogatory comments were made about European allies, with Vice President JD Vance calling the operation ‘a mistake’ that benefited Europe rather than the US.

The administration is now under pressure to clarify the matter, while Goldberg considers further steps to document what happened in this unclassified chat.
