Queen Elizabeth’s death: Charles lied to Harry because he didn’t want Meghan there

Harry recounts conflict over Meghan at Balmoral: ‘He didn’t want her’

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has led to tension between Prince Harry and his father, the future King Charles, over the presence of his wife Meghan during the crucial moment. According to Robert Hardman’s biography, Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story, Charles had asked his son to travel alone to Balmoral, where the queen was about to die, without Meghan, to avoid family conflicts. However, Harry recounts in his book Spare that he had a heated exchange with his father about the decision, finding Charles’ reasons “absurd and disrespectful”. Harry remembers firmly replying, ‘Don’t ever speak about my wife like that,’ as Charles tried to justify his choice.

The decision not to invite Meghan, however, also seemed to have been influenced by the behaviour of Princess Kate, who, according to Hardman, had autonomously chosen not to go to Balmoral to stay in England with her children, who were busy starting school. Her choice, paradoxically, gave further impetus to Charles, who used this pretext not to let Meghan come to the UK, thus easing tensions within the family.

Queen Elizabeth died on 8 September 2022, and only Charles, Camilla and Princess Anne were able to see her before her death. Harry, unfortunately, was not able to arrive in time, but this episode highlighted even more the rift between personal choices and family dynamics.
