The actor loses the Sylvanus Thayer Award, the US president celebrates on Truth Social

The US Military Academy at West Point has cancelled the ceremony to present Tom Hanks with the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award, originally scheduled for 2025. The announcement, sent by email by retired Colonel Mark Bieger, emphasised the academy’s need to “focus on its primary mission: preparing cadets to lead, fight and win as officers in the world’s deadliest army”.

Tom Hanks and the reasons for the award

The two-time Oscar-winning actor had been selected for the award as an “outstanding American citizen”, particularly for his support of the military and commemorative initiatives. However, according to the Washington Post, Hanks’ proximity to the Democratic Party – his support for Joe Biden in 2020, the awarding of the Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama and donations to Democratic candidates – may have influenced the final decision.

Donald Trump’s reaction

The announcement immediately sparked jubilation from US President Donald Trump, who celebrated the academy’s choice on Truth Social. ‘Our great West Point (always the best!) wisely cancelled the award ceremony for actor Tom Hanks. Important move! We don’t need destructive, woke recipients receiving our beloved American awards!” he wrote, adding a call to review the standards of other US awards such as the Academy Awards.

A divisive episode

The cancellation of Hanks’ award highlights the political and cultural tensions within US institutions, between the recognition of civil merit and attention to personal political positions. The story has already sparked debate on social media and in the media, confirming that even traditional awards can become a battleground for ideology.
