Brazil, 27 years for Bolsonaro: street parties and vigils of support
In Brasilia, marches and chants against the former president, while his supporters pray in front of his home
The 27-year prison sentence for coup conspiracy handed down to former president Jair Bolsonaro has sparked mixed reactions in the Brazilian capital. Hundreds of people took to the streets of Brasilia to celebrate what they called “a victory for justice”. A group of students paraded a giant inflatable doll of the former head of state on a tow truck, chanting slogans against Bolsonaro and, surprisingly, also against US President Donald Trump.
‘It’s a victory, justice has been done,’ said activist Leticia Holanda. There were also scenes of celebration in the Pardim bar, a meeting place for the local left, where the chant ‘Bolsonaro in prison!’ rang out.
Vigil and flags in front of the former leader’s house
The atmosphere was different in the residential neighbourhood where the former president, now under house arrest, awaits the next legal moves. Dozens of supporters gathered in prayer, waving Brazilian, US and Israeli flags. ‘President Bolsonaro, we love you!’ shouted Rita dos Passos, 59, into the microphone.
The Supreme Court has issued a historic ruling that divides the country. Bolsonaro’s lawyers have already announced an appeal.
