Defence Secretary Hegseth confirms before Congress: ‘We must be prepared for any eventuality’

The Pentagon has drawn up plans for a possible military invasion of Greenland and Panama. This was confirmed by US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth during a hearing before the House Armed Services Committee.

Pressed by Democratic Representative Adam Smith, who explicitly asked whether the Department of Defence was prepared to occupy the two territories militarily, Hegseth avoided a direct answer but admitted: ‘Our job is to be prepared for any eventuality.’

Smith, the leading Democrat on the committee, insisted on clarification about the type of operations planned for Greenland and Panama, but the Secretary of Defence reiterated that the Pentagon must “have plans for every specific scenario”, without confirming or denying any intention to take action.

The statements immediately sparked mixed reactions, raising questions about the strategic motivations behind such controversial assumptions. Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, has been at the centre of geopolitical and environmental interests for years, while Panama is a crucial hub for global naval logistics.

At present, there are no concrete signs of military mobilisation, but Hegseth’s words confirm a climate of growing assertiveness in American defence strategy under the Trump presidency.
