Ukraine, meeting in Istanbul with US, UK, France and Germany ahead of negotiations with Russia
Preparatory summit between senior Ukrainian and Western officials. Direct talks with Moscow to begin shortly
A confidential meeting between representatives of Ukraine and senior officials from the US, the UK, France and Germany in Istanbul was concluded ahead of the imminent opening of direct negotiations between Kiev and Moscow.
Present for the Ukrainian delegation were National Security Advisor Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov. The table was also attended by the national security advisors of the four Western countries, in a discussion aimed at coordinating positions and strategies in view of the upcoming talks.
The meeting represents a key step in multilateral diplomacy that is trying to revive dialogue after months of deadlock and tensions on the military front. Direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are expected soon, although the conditions for an understanding remain uncertain.
