The first impression always seems to be the same: Putin wants everything and in return basically gives nothing… White House and Moscow, however, seem enthusiastic

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin aligned in a phone call lasting more than two hours, in which a partial ceasefire was agreed upon. Russia agreed to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for a period of 30 days, paving the way for a potential peace process. This is the first concrete step towards a ceasefire, which could evolve into an extended ceasefire, with negotiations also focusing on the Black Sea situation.

Moscow’s position: readiness for peace

According to Kremlin reports, Putin has shown himself open to working with Trump for peace in Ukraine. The main condition set by Moscow is the cessation of US military support to Kiev, including the sharing of intelligence information. The Russian president stated that only if this condition is met will it be possible to embark on a path to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. In addition, groups of Russian and American experts will be formed to work together on a peace agreement.

The White House report

From the White House, we read that both leaders agreed on the need for a lasting peace. ‘The resources expended in this war could be better utilised for their respective peoples,’ Trump said. The conversation laid the groundwork for further technical talks on a comprehensive ceasefire, building on the one already agreed on energy infrastructure and expanding it to a cessation of hostilities in the Black Sea. Besides Ukraine, the discussion touched on topics such as the Middle East and bilateral cooperation to prevent new conflicts and limit the proliferation of strategic weapons.

US-Russian cooperation and international stability

Both leaders agreed that improved US-Russian relations will bring significant economic and geopolitical benefits, contributing to global stability. A key point was their common opposition to the possibility of Iran becoming an existential threat to Israel.

The prisoner exchange: a goodwill gesture

One of the concrete results of the talks was the agreement on a prisoner exchange: 175 prisoners will be exchanged on both sides, with Moscow also handing over 23 seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers. This goodwill gesture is a tangible sign of the willingness of both nations to cooperate in alleviating the suffering caused by the conflict.

UN welcomes first steps towards peace

The United Nations welcomed the meeting between the two leaders. The spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that the mere fact that the two heads of state had spoken was already an important step towards dialogue, emphasising the importance of US-Russian cooperation for global stability.

…in the end everyone is happy, but what does Ukraine think?

Everyone seems to appreciate this, but, at the end of the day, it seems that the only one who will certainly lose out is Ukraine, battered, bombed, invaded, and having to swallow whatever the ‘Bosses’ of the two superpowers have decided to administer.
