Impending Trump and Putin talks: possible breakthrough towards ceasefire
A crucial meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin will take place this week to discuss the terms of a ceasefire in the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine. Kiev has accepted the truce proposed by the US, while confirmation is still awaited from Moscow
This week, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will hold decisive talks on a ceasefire in the three-year-long war between Russia and Ukraine. This was announced by Steve Witkoff, the US president’s special envoy for Russia, who recently met with Putin during a trip to Moscow. The direct contact between the two leaders is a key step in seeking a solution to the crisis.
Kiev has already accepted the US proposal for a 30-day truce, while the Kremlin has shown openness, but with certain conditions. According to Witkoff, the meeting could unblock the situation and reduce the distance between the parties, with a ceasefire that could become a reality within a few weeks.
Putin recently reiterated that Russia does not intend to give up the territories taken from Ukraine, and emphasised the need to address the root causes of the conflict. Another outstanding issue concerns Russia’s Kursk region, where Moscow claims to have full control, demanding the surrender of the remaining Ukrainian soldiers. Trump asked the Russian president to spare the soldiers’ lives, while denials came from Kiev about the risk of encirclement.
