Agreement between Trump-Trudeau: Canada reinforces border with 10,000 troops
We could call it the ‘10,000-man border truce’. Like Mexico Ottawa gets 30-day suspension of US duties and like Sheinbaum, Trudeau pledges to better control the border
After Mexico, Canada has also reached an agreement with US President Donald Trump to suspend the tariffs imposed by Washington. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that trade tariffs will be frozen for at least 30 days, following a phone call with the US leader.
‘I just heard from him, it was a good conversation,’ Trudeau said, stressing that Canada will tighten border controls to counter illegal entry and fentanyl trafficking.
1.3 billion plan for security
Ottawa has launched a $1.3 billion plan to improve border surveillance with the United States. The plan includes the deployment of 10,000 troops, upgraded infrastructure with new helicopters, advanced technology, and increased coordination with US authorities.
‘We will ensure 24/7 monitoring,’ Trudeau explained, also announcing the creation of a joint US-Canada strike force to fight organised crime and fentanyl trafficking. In addition, the premier signed a new intelligence directive on organised crime, backed by a USD 200 million investment.
