Heavy duties, revoked visas and entry bans: Washington’s hard line after Bogota’s stop

Donald Trump wastes no time and responds with an iron fist to the Colombian government’s decision to block two US flights intended for the repatriation of irregular migrants. In a post on his Truth social site, the former US president announced a series of measures that leave little room for diplomacy and sound like a declaration of trade war.

The first lunge concerns the immediate introduction of 25% duties on all Colombian exports to the United States. But it does not end there: Trump has warned that the tariff will rise to 50% within a week unless Bogotá revises its position.

The consequences, however, are not limited to trade. Trump ordered a ban on all Colombian government leaders entering the US, extending the measure to their allies and supporters as well. As if that were not enough, he added the revocation of visas, striking directly at the heart of the Colombian leadership.

With this move, Trump not only relaunches his ‘America First’ style, but sends an unequivocal message: those who obstruct US migration policies will pay the consequences.
