Recruitment underway to fight against Russia, with a focus on experienced and English-speaking volunteers

As the conflict in Ukraine enters its fourth year, the Azov Brigade has announced its intention to recruit an ‘international battalion’ consisting of soldiers of different nationalities. The war, which began with the Russian invasion in February 2022, continues to ravage the country, and Azov, one of the most notorious and controversial units, is seeking to strengthen its ranks to counter Russian forces.

According to reports in the Guardian, the brigade commander, who goes by the name ‘Karl’, said the brigade is looking for recruits who speak English and have military experience. ‘We are fighting to prevent Russia from approaching Europe,’ the commander said. The Azov brigade, currently operating near Toretsk in eastern Ukraine, is stepping up its recruitment, aiming to attract volunteers from around the world.

The selection process for non-Ukrainians involves interviews in Kiev, psychological assessments and a series of tests to verify that candidates are not infiltrated by Russian agents. Those who pass this stage, even if they have military experience, must undergo a training period lasting two to three months. The brigade pointed out that, since the war began, there have been 15 deaths among British fighters who have joined the cause, including volunteers.
