The Pope, apyretic and stable, has received the Eucharist and continues to work, but remains under close observation for bilateral pneumonia
The condition of Pope Francis, who has been hospitalised for seven days at the Policlinico Gemelli for bilateral pneumonia, shows ‘slight improvement’. According to the Vatican’s latest update, the Pontiff is apyretic and his haemodynamic parameters continue to be stable. This morning, he received the Eucharist and subsequently went to work, a sign of a gradual recovery.
Despite the progress, the doctors remain cautious. The Holy Father’s hospitalisation is set to continue for several more days and it is uncertain whether he will be able to lead the Angelus next Sunday. Last week, although he was unable to attend, Pope Francis had sent a message to share his thoughts with the faithful. Also for this week, doctors have prescribed ‘absolute rest’.
The duration of hospitalisation could exceed two weeks, as the treatment for bilateral pneumonia is long and complex. It is a disease that takes time to heal completely, especially to avoid relapses or complications, such as a simple cold. Matteo Bassetti, director of Infectious Diseases at the Policlinico San Martino Hospital in Genoa, told Adnkronos that treatment for these forms of pneumonia usually lasts from eight to ten days up to two weeks, with the possibility of discharge at the end of next week, depending on Pope’s progress. ‘He is working and seems to be better than in the past days,’ Bassetti added.
