The Holy Father has been hospitalised since 14 February for bilateral pneumonia. Doctors have loosened the prognosis but remain cautious due to the complexity of the clinical picture

Doctors at the Gemelli Hospital have released the prognosis on Pope Francis, who has been hospitalised since 14 February due to bilateral pneumonia. According to the latest medical bulletin released by the Vatican, the Holy Father is showing steady improvement. ‘The clinical conditions continue to be stable and the improvements recorded in the previous days have been further consolidated,’ the statement reads.

Despite this, the doctors remain cautious due to the complexity of the clinical picture and the important infectious picture presented at the time of admission. The drug therapy will have to continue for several more days in a hospital environment, under close medical supervision.

According to Vatican sources, although his life is not in imminent danger, the Pontiff, given his age of 88, remains vulnerable. The oxygenation to which he is subjected remains unchanged, with oxygen at high flows during the day and an oxygen mask at night.

The Pope participated in the Curia’s Spiritual Exercises by video link from the Paul VI Hall, received the Eucharist and prayed in the private chapel. During the day he alternated moments of prayer and rest.

Despite the progress, the doctors remain cautious as the complex clinical picture may hold other complications in store. The development of the situation will be closely monitored in the coming days.
