The man was found in possession of a gun and a mask connected to the crime

Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested in Pennsylvania as part of the investigation into the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of insurance company UnitedHealthcare, who was killed last week in New York. Mangione, who was apprehended in the town of Altoona, was found in possession of a gun compatible with the one used in the shooting and a mask similar to the one worn by the killer in the surveillance camera footage. Although the surname suggests at least an Italian origin, there is still no official confirmation of this.

Details of the arrest

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was arrested on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm. He is currently considered a ‘person of interest’ in Thompson’s murder case. The alarm was triggered by a fast food employee who recognised the man from photos released by the media. Mangione, who tried to produce false documents, also allegedly had a three-page manifesto with him, in which he expressed criticism of insurance companies and justified the use of violence.

An unconventional weapon: the ghost gun

The weapon found in Mangione’s possession is a ‘ghost gun’, a gun assembled without a serial number and, therefore, untraceable. It is suspected that it may have been 3D printed. The police are conducting ballistic tests to confirm whether it was indeed the weapon used in the murder. Ghost guns, which are increasingly used in violent crime, pose a growing problem for law enforcement agencies, as they can be built by purchasing kits online without having to go through the security checks typical of traditional weapons.

Statements by the Mayor of New York

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that the arrested suspect ‘fits the description of the killer’ and that the material found in his possession would link him to the crime. ‘This arrest represents a crucial step in the investigation to bring justice to Brian Thompson and his family,’ Adams said during a press conference.
