Trump suspends tariffs for a month and Mexico deploys 10,000 soldiers to the border
Agreement between Sheinbaum and the US president: one month of economic truce in exchange for a militarised border to block migrants and drugs
Donald Trump agreed to suspend the threatened tariffs against Mexico for a month, but not without quid pro quo. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her government will deploy 10,000 soldiers along the border to counter the flow of migrants and drug trafficking.
An agreement that confirms Trump’s hard line, determined to turn the border into a fortress. Mexico, in order to avoid a blow to the national economy, has agreed to act as a shield, taking responsibility for containing migrants heading for the United States.
The arrangement gives Trump an immediate political advantage, while Sheinbaum is in the uncomfortable position of having to justify a forced militarisation of the national territory. The trade truce will only last for a month: once the deadline has passed, the US president may return to the charge, demanding even more.
