New alarm in southern Israel over intercepted rocket. Iran celebrates the “martyrs” of the lightning war with Tel Aviv. Trump and Tehran clash again from a distance

New alarm sirens sounded today, Saturday 28 June, in southern Israel, including Be’er Sheva and Dimona, due to a missile launched from Yemen. According to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), the missile was successfully intercepted. This is yet another sign of instability in an area still rife with military tensions.

Meanwhile, in Iran, it is a day of national mourning for the “martyrs” of the 12 days of conflict triggered by the Israeli operation that began on 13 June. Thousands of people gathered in Tehran, between Enghelab Square and the University, to pay tribute to the officers and scientists who were killed. The coffins, wrapped in the Iranian flag, were carried in procession, while slogans against Israel and the United States rang out. Among those present was the new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Diplomatic tensions remain high. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded harshly to Donald Trump, who had declared on Truth that he had “saved” Ali Khamenei from “a disgraceful death”. “The Iranian people do not accept threats or insults,” Araghchi wrote, warning: “If the West makes worse mistakes, Iran will respond forcefully”.

On the night between 21 and 22 June, the United States struck three sites of the Iranian nuclear programme, while Israeli raids continued. After 12 days, it was Trump who announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, which, however, did not stop the hostilities in the region.

In the Gaza Strip, at least 14 people died between last night and early this morning. According to al-Jazeera, six victims were reported in Khan Yunis, where Israeli forces allegedly struck tents housing displaced persons in the al-Mawasi area. Eight other people, including a woman and two minors, were killed in a raid in Saftawi, in the north, which struck a school used as a shelter.
