Trump to Netanyahu: ‘Stop the raids on Qatar, it’s unacceptable’
Tension between Washington and Tel Aviv after the bombing of Doha. The US president is furious at not having been informed in advance
Washington – Donald Trump has ordered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop attacking Qatar, after Tuesday’s raid took the White House by surprise. This was revealed by Axios, citing two sources familiar with the ‘heated’ phone call, which was also described by the Wall Street Journal. According to reports, the American president expressed ‘deep frustration’ at being kept in the dark about the operation: ‘This is unacceptable. I demand that you do not repeat this,’ he reportedly told Netanyahu.
Trump then informed the Emir and Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani, who, according to US sources, spoke of “betrayal” by Israel and the US, threatening a review of the security partnership with Washington.
A former US official reports that White House envoy Steve Witkoff was warned that Doha would ‘consider other partners’ if US protection was not guaranteed.
The first phone call between Trump and Netanyahu was heated, with the president disappointed by the attack on an ally engaged in mediation to end the war in Gaza. The Wall Street Journal adds that Trump was irritated to have learned of the raid from the US military and not from Israel.
The second conversation was more relaxed, but a senior US official confirms that the president remains upset by ‘Netanyahu’s aggressive moves’ considered to be at odds with US objectives in the Middle East.
