Gaza City, IDF strikes skyscraper: ‘Hamas observation post’
Evacuation warnings and fears of ‘catastrophic consequences’
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced an attack on a skyscraper in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood of Gaza City, used by Hamas. According to spokesman Avihai Adraee, the building housed data collection equipment and observation posts to monitor Israeli forces, as well as explosive traps set up in anticipation of the arrival of troops.
Before the attack, the IDF issued an urgent evacuation warning, recommending that residents move immediately south to the Al-Mawasi humanitarian area in Khan Yunis. The warning specifically concerned the “Al-Ra’i Tower” and nearby tents, located at the intersection of Beirut Street and Arab League Street. ‘For your safety, evacuate the area immediately and join the thousands of people who have already moved to the humanitarian zone,’ read the message posted on X by the IDF spokesperson.
The UN estimates that around one million people are still in the Gaza City area and warns of the risk of an “imminent disaster” if the offensive continues.
According to Al Jazeera, Israeli attacks killed more than 50 Palestinians yesterday, including at least seven children. Night-time attacks hit homes in the Shati refugee camp, causing further casualties, including children. Demolitions are also continuing in other areas of the city.
Amnesty International has sounded the alarm: the military escalation in Gaza City risks having ‘catastrophic and irreversible consequences’ for the civilian population.
