The actor who defined an era – Among his best-known performances are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), a wistful look at outlaws in a fading West, and All the President’s Men (1976), chronicling the Watergate investigation. He played a CIA codebreaker drawn into a deadly conspiracy in Three Days of the Condor (1975) and earned his only acting Oscar nomination for The Sting (1973), a tale of Depression-era con artists.
Equally at ease in romance and drama, Redford became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men, starring opposite Jane Fonda in Barefoot in the Park (1967), Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were (1973) and Meryl Streep in Out of Africa (1985).

He founded the non-profit Sundance Institute in 1981 and, three years later, took charge of a struggling Utah film festival, soon renaming it the Sundance Film Festival. Under his stewardship it became the premier showcase for emerging filmmakers, launching the careers of Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Jim Jarmusch, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan and many others.

Private life – Redford married historian Lola Van Wagenen in 1958. They had four children, though tragedy struck early when their infant son Scott died of sudden infant death syndrome. Daughters Shauna and Amy survive him; their brother James died of cancer in 2020. After divorcing in 1985, Redford married German artist Sibylle Szaggars in 2009.
