The Hollywood leading man who became a champion of independent cinema passed away peacefully at his Utah home, leaving a legacy that reshaped both mainstream and art-house film
Farewell to a Hollywood icon – Robert Redford, the magnetic screen idol who evolved into an Oscar-winning director and tireless advocate for independent film, died early on Tuesday at his home in the mountains near Provo, Utah. He was 89. His death, announced by Cindi Berger of the Rogers & Cowan Pmk agency, occurred in his sleep; no specific cause was given.
A career that mirrored America – Redford’s body of work often helped America see itself more clearly. He brought depth and intelligence to roles that explored grief, corruption and the complexity of human motives, pairing a natural charisma with a refusal to simplify difficult truths. Off-screen he was a committed environmentalist and an outspoken critic of Hollywood’s formulaic tendencies, insisting that films should carry cultural weight.
The actor who defined an era – Among his best-known performances are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), a wistful look at outlaws in a fading West, and All the President’s Men (1976), chronicling the Watergate investigation. He played a CIA codebreaker drawn into a deadly conspiracy in Three Days of the Condor (1975) and earned his only acting Oscar nomination for The Sting (1973), a tale of Depression-era con artists.
Equally at ease in romance and drama, Redford became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men, starring opposite Jane Fonda in Barefoot in the Park (1967), Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were (1973) and Meryl Streep in Out of Africa (1985).
From star to filmmaker – Turning to directing in his forties, Redford won the Academy Award for his debut feature Ordinary People (1980), an unflinching portrait of a family torn apart by tragedy, which also took the Oscar for Best Picture. He followed with the New Mexico drama The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), then the elegiac A River Runs Through It (1992) and the acclaimed Quiz Show (1994), which earned four Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. In 2002 he received an honorary Oscar recognising his lifetime contribution to cinema.
Champion of independent film – Redford’s most enduring cultural impact may lie in his championing of independent voices. He founded the non-profit Sundance Institute in 1981 and, three years later, took charge of a struggling Utah film festival, soon renaming it the Sundance Film Festival. Under his stewardship it became the premier showcase for emerging filmmakers, launching the careers of Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Jim Jarmusch, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan and many others.
Private life – Redford married historian Lola Van Wagenen in 1958. They had four children, though tragedy struck early when their infant son Scott died of sudden infant death syndrome. Daughters Shauna and Amy survive him; their brother James died of cancer in 2020. After divorcing in 1985, Redford married German artist Sibylle Szaggars in 2009.
A lasting legacy – From his early days as a golden-haired leading man to his later role as an uncompromising director and patron of independent cinema, Robert Redford reshaped the possibilities of American film. His artistry, environmental activism and unwavering belief in the power of storytelling ensure that his influence will endure far beyond the silver screen.
