Iran denounces violations of the agreement after the end of the conflict and asks the UN to assign formal responsibility for the 12-day war

Iran expresses strong scepticism about the durability of the ceasefire with Israel, which came into effect on Tuesday after twelve days of intense military clashes. Iranian Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Moussavi said on state television that Tehran “did not start the war, but responded with all its might to the aggression”, adding that “serious doubts remain about Israel’s commitment to its obligations, including the ceasefire”, and that the country is “ready for a strong response”.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, asking the Security Council to recognise Israel and the United States as responsible for starting the conflict. The letter calls for formal attribution of responsibility “for the act of aggression” and urges compensation and reparations.

Also in Tehran, the judiciary announced that at least 71 people were killed in the Israeli bombing of Evin prison, north of the capital, on Monday. The attack, which sparked outrage in Iran, took place just days after the agreement that ended the conflict.
