Trump threatens retaliation if hostages not freed by 20 January
US president-elect promises tough action against those responsible for atrocities in the Middle East
‘It’s just words and no action,’ was Donald Trump’s criticism of the lack of progress in the release of hostages held for over a year by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Trump warned that if the hostages are not freed before 20 January, when he officially takes office as US president, there will be a ‘heavy price to pay’ in the Middle East.
Trump expressed his disappointment on Truth Social, stating that ‘everyone is talking about the hostages being held so violently, inhumanly, and against the will of the entire world in the Middle East. But it’s just words and no action!’ He added that on 20 January 2025, the date he will proudly assume the office of President of the United States, ‘those who are in charge and have perpetrated these atrocities against humanity will have to pay hell’. Trump promised that those responsible will be hit ‘harder than anyone in the long and storied History of the United States of America’. He concluded with an appeal: ‘Release the hostages now!’
Meanwhile, Yair Netanyahu, son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, posted a photo on X showing him having dinner with his mother Sara and President-elect Trump at the golf resort in Florida. Another photo of Sara Netanyahu and Trump was posted by the president-elect’s deputy communications director. Yair Netanyahu thanked Trump for the ‘wonderful dinner’ and expressed impatience for the arrival on 20 January.
