According to Politico, the Slovak prime minister shared concerns with EU leaders about Donald Trump’s psychological state. Both Bratislava and the White House deny the account

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was allegedly left deeply unsettled by the psychological state of U.S. President Donald Trump following a private meeting at Mar-a-Lago, according to a report published by Politico. The account says Fico later shared his concerns with European leaders on the sidelines of an emergency European Council meeting in Brussels focused on U.S. threats regarding Greenland.

Politico, citing five European diplomats familiar with the conversation, reports that Fico’s remarks carried particular weight given his reputation as one of Trump’s closest allies within the European Union. According to two diplomats, the Slovak leader described the U.S. president as “dangerous” and “out of his mind” after their face-to-face meeting at Trump’s Florida residence.

The comments were not made during formal talks but emerged during an informal exchange among EU leaders and senior officials. Politico notes that none of the diplomats it spoke to were personally present during the conversation, but each was briefed shortly afterward by individual leaders. Four of the sources represent different EU governments, while the fifth is a senior European official.

After the article was published, Fico forcefully denied the allegations in a social media post, rejecting what he called “lies invented by the Politico portal” regarding his assessment of the meeting with President Donald Trump. He insisted that he did not speak at the informal Brussels gathering and claimed there were no witnesses to support the report.

Fico added that while he agrees with several strategies pursued by the U.S. president, he disagrees with others. He also said he had expected his visit to the United States to be canceled following strong remarks he made about Venezuela, noting that this did not happen and that it led him to value the meeting even more.

The White House had already dismissed the report. Spokesperson Anna Kelly described the claims as “absolutely false,” accusing anonymous European diplomats of seeking attention. According to Kelly, the Mar-a-Lago meeting was “positive and productive.”

Politico also cited a senior Trump administration official who was present at the meeting, stating that there were no awkward or unusual moments and describing the encounter as “pleasant” and “normal,” including lighthearted exchanges captured by a White House photographer. By contrast, one EU diplomat told Politico that a leader briefed on the conversation said Fico appeared “traumatized” by the meeting.

Beyond the specific claims about Fico, Politico reports growing concern among European leaders and officials over what they describe as the increasing unpredictability of the U.S. president. According to another EU diplomat, worries about Trump’s condition are rapidly becoming a topic of discussion at multiple political levels in Brussels and across European capitals. In this context, the report concludes, the episode involving Fico shocked by Trump after Mar-a-Lago meeting has amplified broader unease within the EU.
