Raid against an arms convoy in Dayr az Zawr province. Ongoing protests in Damascus against violence against Christians
The U.S. military conducted an airstrike in Syria today, striking an Islamic State convoy in Dayr az Zawr province. Two members of the jihadist group were killed and a third was wounded. U.S. Central Command disclosed in a statement on X that the militiamen were transporting a truck loaded with weapons to an area previously under the control of Syrian government and Russian forces.
The context of the attack: a disputed region
Dayr az Zawr, located in eastern Syria, is a strategic area contested by several actors, including Syrian government forces, Islamist militias, and armed groups backed by international powers such as the United States and Russia. Today’s attack comes amid prolonged instability, with U.S. forces continuing to operate in the region to target remnants of the Islamic State and maintain security in the area.
Protests in Damascus: Christmas tree fire ignites tension
As conflict and air strikes continue in Syria, hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Christian neighborhoods of Damascus. The protest erupted after a Christmas tree was set on fire near Hama in central Syria. The crowd, composed mainly of members of the Christian community, marched toward the Orthodox Patriarchate headquarters in the capital’s Bab Sharqi neighborhood, shouting, “We demand the rights of Christians.” This incident further aggravated religious tensions in a country already ravaged by more than a decade of civil war.
A climate of insecurity for religious minorities
The protests come shortly after the fall of the regime of Bashar al-Assad, deposed by an armed coalition led by Islamist HTS groups, which, at least in words, have guaranteed to protect Christian communities and other minorities from persecution.
