The two-year-old girl and her 37-year-old mother, who were severely injured in the car attack that crashed into a crowd gathered for a trade union demonstration in Munich on 13 February, did not make it. The police confirmed the tragic death, announcing that both died as a result of their injuries. ‘Unfortunately, today we have to confirm the death of the two-year-old girl and the 37-year-old mother,’ Ludwig Waldinger, police spokesman, said in a statement released to Afp.

Deliberate attack: a young Afghan driving the murderous car

The attack, in which at least 30 people were injured, was carried out by a young Afghan man, 24 years old, who was already known to the police for a history of theft and drug offences. During a demonstration organised by the Greens, the man threw his car into the crowd in an act that, according to initial reconstructions, appears to have extremist motives. The suspect, identified by the media as Farhad N., who was born in Kabul in 2001 and arrived in Germany at the end of 2016, allegedly shared pro-Islamist content on social media before the attack. According to the weekly Der Spiegel, Farhad N. had also travelled through Italy before settling in Germany.

Extremism investigation: Munich seeks answers

The German police, together with the Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism of the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office, are investigating the origins and motives of the bomber. Initial information indicates that the 24-year-old may have acted under the influence of extremist ideologies, a hypothesis reinforced by his activity on social media and his links to pro-Islamist circles. Investigators are trying to reconstruct his path from the time of his arrival in Germany to the fatal attack. The context of the attack, its premeditation and links to possible extremist organisations are at the centre of the investigation.

Grief and anger: the city demands justice

The city of Munich, shocked by the incident, mourns the victims of a blind act of violence that took away a mother and daughter and left dozens of people injured and traumatised. Local authorities continue to call for calm and promise full justice for the victims, while the case has sparked a heated debate on security and the integration of asylum seekers in Europe, especially in a context of rising tensions related to extremism.
