Instability and power vacuum could encourage the return of Islamic extremism to the country

The risk of a ‘return’ of the Islamic State (Isis) to Syria is real, according to Hussam Eesa, co-founder of the group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently. In an interview with Adnkronos, the activist pointed out that the power vacuum created by the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime could be fertile ground for the return of Isis or other extremist groups, taking advantage of the instability and divisions between rival factions.

Despite hopes for political change, Eesa warns against easy enthusiasm about Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Hts), a group with roots in al-Qaeda, and its ability to establish a stable and democratic system of governance. According to Eesa, Hts may face strong resistance in its attempt to unify Syria under its control and its leader, Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, is not considered trustworthy due to his past links to terrorism.
