Over 200,000 demonstrators against the AfD far-right in Munich

The procession against the far-right is a success, with participation well above expectations

In Munich, over 200,000 people (according to the Bavarian police, 320,000 according to the organisers) took part in a demonstration against the extreme right and the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. The procession was organised with the intention of creating a cordon sanitaire against the ultra-right, ruling out any kind of collaboration with AfD.

Initial estimates spoke of around 75,000 participants, but the success of the demonstration went far beyond these forecasts. The demonstration was part of a broader protest movement, which also saw other German cities such as Bielefeld, Frankfurt, Hanover, Bremen and Stuttgart take to the streets to reiterate their rejection of the ultra-right.
