Satellite images show movements of aircraft and military equipment at the Russian base in Khmeimim, but the extent of the withdrawal is still unclear
Russia appears to be preparing to withdraw its troops from military bases in Syria, as reported by CNN based on satellite images collected by Maxar today. Images from the Khmeimim airbase, located in Latakia on Syria’s northwestern coast, show two AN-124 military cargo planes ready to be loaded, suggesting a possible dismantling of Russian operations in the area.
In the same images, a Ka-52 attack helicopter is seen being disassembled, possibly in preparation for transport, as well as an S-400 missile defence system already disassembled and ready for transfer.
Analysts’ Statements: Partial or Total Withdrawal?
According to Michael Kofman, an analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the images suggest that a withdrawal is underway, although it remains to be seen whether it is a total exit of Russian forces or a partial downsizing. ‘There are indications and rumours in this direction, but it is best to wait for further evidence before drawing any firm conclusions,’ Kofman commented.
