Caccialupi remembers Charlie Kirk: ‘You cannot rejoice at the death of someone who has different ideas
The Roman student remembers Charlie Kirk and denounces those who celebrate his death
“Freedom of speech cannot and will not be silenced”. With these words, Lorenzo Caccialupi, 23, a Roman student of Economics and Finance at John Cabot University, commented on the murder of Charlie Kirk. Returning from a semester exchange at San Diego State University, Caccialupi tells Adnkronos about his meeting with the conservative activist and the impact of his tragic death.
Caccialupi attended an event organised by Kirk last May during his stay in the United States. ‘I made a video because I wanted to have my say and express my sympathy to the family, even though they don’t know me. I can’t stand that there are people celebrating his death. It’s despicable,‘ he explains. The student recalls the atmosphere at the meeting: ’There were a lot of people and supporters, but also a few opponents on the sidelines. I spoke to Kirk personally, he gave me his hat and I shook his hand. Although I didn’t agree with all his ideas, I respected him.”
Caccialupi has no doubts about the murder: ‘It’s terrible, and those who celebrate it show unprecedented malice. You can’t rejoice because someone with different ideas has died.’ On the American university climate, he observes: ‘I didn’t find it tense; different opinions exist, but there is dialogue.’
Finally, on the debate about the need for an “Italian Charlie Kirk”, Caccialupi states: “I don’t have an answer. Dialogue is needed. No one should be labelled a fascist or a Nazi for having different ideas. It’s unacceptable”. Regarding the popularity he has gained on social media, he concludes: “I’m not interested in that. I just wanted to have my say and support the family. Insults are meaningless”.
