Washington and Tehran are moving closer to an understanding on the Iranian nuclear dossier. This was confirmed by U.S. President Donald Trump in statements from Doha. “I believe we are getting closer to the conclusion of an agreement,” the White House chief said, hinting at significant progress in talks with the Islamic Republic.
Shortly before, Iranian sources quoted by NBC News had anticipated Tehran’s willingness to reach an understanding with Washington in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, outlined Iran’s openings: a halt to the construction of nuclear weapons, dismantling the stockpile of highly enriched uranium, limiting enrichment to civilian levels only, and full transparency with access for international inspectors.
The prospect of an agreement would mark a change of pace after years of tensions and sanctions, with a possible positive impact on Iran-U.S. relations and the stability of the Middle East region.
