The US president does not give up on the idea of the prize and points to normalisation between Israel and Arab countries, while mediation on the war in Ukraine continues
Donald Trump is not entirely giving up his ambition for a Nobel Peace Prize. Sitting in the Oval Office, the US president acknowledges that the mission to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine is not yet accomplished, but raises the bar: ‘Perhaps I deserve the prize for the Abrahamic Accords’, referring to the historic treaties to normalise relations between Israel and various Arab countries, initiated during his first term in office.
The diplomatic initiative, Trump emphasises, continues to expand, with new states ready to join. ‘We will add them very quickly,’ he assures, highlighting the strategic impact of the process for stability in the Middle East and for global peace.
Also speaking in support of the candidacy is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who calls Trump ‘a peacemaker’ and praises his current engagement in the Ukraine crisis. ‘We have presented Russia and Ukraine with a plan with concrete options to end the war,’ he says. ‘Now both must say yes. Our goal is to stop the death and destruction.’
Rubio stresses that the latest Russian attack on Kiev, among the most serious in recent months, has not stopped American diplomatic action. ‘This is not a war we wanted or started,’ he clarifies, ’but we are doing everything we can to save lives.
The reference to the Abrahamic Accords thus serves to keep open a prospect of international recognition, even at a time when US diplomacy is under scrutiny for the difficult balance between firmness and neutrality in the Ukrainian conflict. The Nobel nomination is not official, but the message is clear: Trump wants his actions to be remembered as that of a peace broker.
