The US president challenges Beijing and announces new investments. China condemns ‘abusive’ use of tariffs and calls for a return to dialogue

The trade war between the US and China has officially kicked off. US President Donald Trump, in the middle of his second term, raises the challenge to Beijing: ‘This is an economic revolution, and we will win. Brace yourselves, it won’t be easy, but the outcome will be historic,’ he wrote on Truth Social, downplaying the impact of Chinese counter-duties to 34% and claiming an unprecedented industrial recovery. ‘We are bringing back jobs and businesses like never before,’ he added, ‘We have already invested over $50 million and are growing rapidly.

China’s retort was immediate, calling the US use of tariffs ‘abusive’ and contrary to WTO rules. In a tough official statement, Beijing accuses Washington of implementing economic coercion disguised as fairness, promoting a hegemonic vision based on ‘America First’. The Chinese government says it is ready to defend its sovereignty and economic security, while reaffirming its willingness to maintain cooperation with the US on a reciprocal basis.

‘The US must put an end to the use of tariffs as a political weapon and respect the legitimate rights of the Chinese people,’ reads the document, which also launches a call for multilateralism as the foundation of shared and sustainable development.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun kicked up a fuss on Facebook, accusing the US of triggering an ‘unjustified’ trade war that is already causing severe downturns in global markets. ‘The market has spoken,’ he said, ‘It is time for the US to stop making mistakes and return to dialogue on an equal footing.
