The presidency creates a committee for civil peace after clashes that left more than 1,300 dead, mostly Alawite civilians

The Syrian Defence Ministry announced the end of the military operation in the country’s western coastal regions, including Latakia and Tartus, the scene of violent clashes between security forces and Alawite militias. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 1,300 people, including 830 Alawite civilians, were killed in the fighting.

Defence Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdel Ghani said that the operation had achieved its objectives, neutralising threats from rebel forces. At the same time, the Syrian presidency established an independent national commission to investigate the violent events of the last few days and identify those responsible for the civilian casualties.

The presidency also announced the creation of a Higher Committee for Civilian Peace, tasked with talking to the local population to ensure security and stability. The Committee will work to strengthen national unity at this critical time for the country.

Iran categorically rejected accusations of involvement in the violence. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai called the accusations ‘ridiculous’ and condemned the violence against minorities in Syria, including Alawite, Druze and Christian minorities.

Meanwhile, China expressed strong concern about the conflict in Syria and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called on the parties involved to find an inclusive solution through dialogue.
