Gaza, Hamas ready to release all hostages in one swap in second phase truce
After the release of 19 Israeli hostages, Hamas announces that it is prepared to release all remaining hostages in a single settlement during the second phase of the truce
In a statement released to Afp, a senior Hamas official confirmed that the militant group is prepared to release all remaining hostages in a single exchange during the second phase of the ongoing Gaza truce. Taher al-Nunu, a Hamas spokesman, explained that the group has informed international mediators of its intention to release all hostages at once, rather than doing so in several stages as stipulated in the first part of the agreement.
Details remain vague
At the moment, al-Nunu has not provided details on the exact number of hostages still held by Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza. Thus, the situation remains unclear, fueling concern and uncertainty. However, Hamas’ statement is seen as a positive step in the negotiations, which could lead to a final agreement to release the hostages.
The first phase of the truce
Israel and Hamas are implementing the first phase of the truce, which began on Jan. 19. To date, 19 Israeli hostages have been freed by Hamas in exchange for more than 1,100 Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli jails. After the completion of the first phase of the truce, 58 hostages will remain in Gaza, of whom 34, according to the Israeli army, have already died. This toll makes the situation even more dramatic, with many family members waiting for news of their loved ones.
The implications for the second phase
Hamas’ proposal to release all remaining hostages in one settlement marks a possible turning point in negotiations, but negotiations remain complex and depend on acceptance by both sides. The international community continues to monitor developments in the truce, hoping for a solution that can ensure an end to the conflict and a return to a more stable and secure situation for those involved.
