The quake is the strongest in days, and the island remains under continuous alert
A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Greek island of Santorini today, with its epicentre 17 kilometres deep. The event, the strongest among those recorded in recent weeks, was also felt in the capital, Athens. The latest quake is part of a series of more than 12,800 tremors that have affected the Cyclades island since 28 January, as confirmed by the Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens.
Following the intensification of seismic activity, local authorities declared a state of emergency on the island, which will remain in force until 3 March. The inhabitants of neighbouring Amorgos are also on high alert, following the magnitude 5 quake recorded on Sunday evening. Despite the first signs of a possible weakening of the seismic swarm, seismologists now fear an increase in its intensity.
So far, fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but about 11,000 people have already left the islands as a precautionary measure, and schools have remained closed. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with the hope that the phenomenon will subside in the coming days.
