The former Syrian president in Russia after the fall of Damascus

Bashar al-Assad and his family are in Moscow, welcomed by the Russian government after the end of his regime. The news, confirmed by Kremlin sources, marks a turning point in the Syrian crisis, which has seen control of the capital pass into the hands of jihadist forces led by Abu Mohammad al-Jawlani.

Assad’s exile: details of the move

According to official sources, Assad left Damascus on Saturday evening. An Iliushin flight that left the capital and disappeared from radar near Homs drew attention, suggesting a discreet operation to bring the former president to safety. Flightradar data confirms that the plane’s transponder was either disabled or malfunctioned.

The fall of Damascus and the rise of al-Jawlani

The advance of the jihadist rebel forces, led by Abu Mohammad al-Jawlani, led to the conquest of the capital in less than two weeks. The rebels entered the presidential palace without any particular resistance, symbolically sanctioning the end of a regime that had lasted more than two decades. The population welcomed the new leaders with demonstrations in the streets and proclamations of hope.

The international context and implications

Assad’s flight and the collapse of his government ignited international reactions. Russia, having supported Assad in the past, has now offered humanitarian refuge, while Russian military bases in Syria remain on high alert. Iran and Israel are closely monitoring developments, with PM Netanyahu tightening security along the Golan border.

Uncertain future for Syria

The transition in Syria remains uncertain. The current premier, Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali, has promised a transitional government open to dialogue. However, internal fragmentation and the interest of foreign powers make the future of the country unpredictable. The fall of Assad is only the first step on a long road to stability.
