The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists sets the clock at 85 seconds to midnight, warning of nuclear escalation, climate change, and disinformation threats

The Doomsday Clock has moved closer than ever to midnight. The Doomsday Clock moves closer to midnight as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists cites growing threats from nuclear weapons, climate change, and global disinformation.

The clock is now set at 85 seconds to midnight, four seconds closer than last year. Scientists on the Bulletin’s board, which includes eight Nobel laureates, warn that deteriorating international cooperation and escalating geopolitical tensions are increasing the risk of catastrophic outcomes.

According to the Bulletin, record carbon dioxide emissions and the erosion of trust in information systems are compounding global threats. The organization described an “information Armageddon,” where technologies spread falsehoods faster than facts, further undermining stability.

Founded in 1947 by Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, and other nuclear scientists, the Doomsday Clock was originally set at seven minutes to midnight. Today, its position at 85 seconds marks the closest humanity has ever been to a symbolic global catastrophe. The Bulletin emphasizes that urgent action is needed to address nuclear risks, climate change, and the integrity of information worldwide.
