Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani (Italy) told Tg1 that the Italians on board will probably be transferred to the port of Ashdod and then expelled. “We have instructed our consulate to assist them and have asked the Israeli government to refrain from violent action, and we have been assured that this will be the case. The flotilla’s spokespeople have also said that they will maintain a Gandhian attitude and not react to the boarding.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto (Italy) took the same line, stating: “I wouldn’t call it an attack, but a blockade. I hope that everything will proceed calmly and rationally, without any risk to the people on board. The boats will be taken to Ashdod, then each country will take care of the return of its own nationals.”

The interception of the flotilla comes as the Israeli government reaffirms its naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, considered a military risk area.
