Tragedy in Graz, Austria, where a shooting inside a school left 10 dead and several seriously injured. The attack was carried out by Artur A., a 22-year-old Austrian citizen and former student of the school.
The weapons and the dynamics of the attack
According to a press conference held by the Austrian police, accompanied by Chancellor Christian Stocker, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler Kunasek and Graz Mayor Elke Kahr, the attacker was armed with a pistol and a hunting rifle. He opened fire in two classrooms, firing at least 40 shots.
The motive: bullying
Initial investigations suggest a motive linked to incidents of bullying suffered in the past within the same institution. Artur A. is believed to have acted alone and there are currently no reports of accomplices or links to extremist organisations.
The toll: victims and injured
The toll of the attack is very heavy: 10 people killed and numerous seriously injured, in “double digits” according to local authorities. Among the victims was the perpetrator of the massacre, who committed suicide immediately after the attack.
