Leaders call for de-escalation in the region, reiterate support for Israel and warn Iran: “Tehran must never acquire a nuclear weapon”

The G7 leaders have released a joint statement on the Middle East, also signed by U.S. President Donald Trump. “We, the Leaders of the G7, reaffirm our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East,” the document reads, as the heads of state and government of the seven nations call for de-escalation in the region.

Trump’s signature came after revisions were made to the draft, which included adjusted wording such as an appeal for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis and a reference to international law, as highlighted by CNN.

“In this context, we affirm that Israel has the right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for Israel’s security. We also emphasize the importance of protecting civilians. Iran remains the main source of instability and terror in the region,” the G7 leaders state.

“We have always been clear: Iran must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon. We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis lead to broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” they continue.

“We will remain vigilant regarding the implications for global energy markets and are prepared to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability,” the declaration concludes.
