Defence Secretary Hegseth imposes press escort requirement across much of the building: criticism from Pentagon Press Association

The US Department of Defence has introduced new restrictions on journalists’ access to the Pentagon headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Starting today, reporters will only be able to enter most of the building if accompanied by an official escort and with prior approval, according to an order signed by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, appointed by the Trump administration.

‘Protection of sensitive information’

In the memo released by the Pentagon, Hegseth justified the decision with the need to protect classified and sensitive information (Csni), stressing that transparency must be balanced with national security. ‘Protection of classified information and operational security are an absolute must,’ he said, reiterating the need to prevent disclosures that could endanger the lives of US military personnel.

Protests from the press: ‘Strike at freedom of information’

The reaction of the press was not long in coming. The Pentagon Press Association, which represents journalists accredited to the Department of Defence, openly criticised the new measures, calling them a “direct attack on freedom of the press”. According to the organisation, the escort requirement severely limits the possibility of independent monitoring of military activities and reduces access to sources and information that are essential for public information.

The new rules are part of a broader context of tension between the Trump administration and the media, with growing accusations of opacity and control over the press.
