Surpassed the 2009 record: it is the highest temperature ever recorded for the month according to official data since 2003

Exceptional heat in the United Arab Emirates, where the temperature reached 50.4 degrees Celsius in Al Shawamekh, near Abu Dhabi, in the early afternoon of Friday 23 May. This was announced by the National Meteorological Centre in a post on X, pointing out that it was the highest temperature ever recorded in May since official measurements began in 2003.

The peak was recorded at 2.30 p.m. local time, and surpassed the previous monthly record of 50.2 degrees, dating back to May 2009. The meteorological agency confirmed to Afp that never before have such heat levels been reached in the country this month.

The figure marks a significant anomaly in an area where summers are notoriously scorching, but the exceeding of the 50 degree threshold already in May is a wake-up call for the climate in the Gulf region.
