Live Video – The homage to Pope Francis continues at St. Peter’s
Exposed in front of the Altar of Confession, the coffin was placed according to the Pontiff’s wishes, in an atmosphere of recollection and devotion
The transfer of the body of Pope Francis took place today in St. Peter’s Basilica. A rite charged with spirituality, accompanied by the prayer for the dead and the singing of the Salve Regina. Numerous faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square to watch the ceremony in silence and emotion, discreetly photographing an event destined to enter the history of the Church.
The homage in front of the Altar of Confession
The Pope’s coffin was placed in front of the Altar of Confession, one of the most significant places in the Basilica. During the rite, the body was blessed with holy water and incensed, following the liturgical traditions that accompany the wake of a Pontiff.
Simplicity desired by the Pontiff
According to Pope Francis’ instructions during his lifetime, the coffin was placed on a slightly inclined platform, resting on a carpet, as a sign of sobriety. A choice that departs from the custom of the catafalque and reflects his pastoral style marked by humility and closeness to the people.
