Conclave, Cardinal Marx: ‘It will be quick. We need a credible and communicative Pope’
The German cardinal excludes the logic of taking sides: ‘It is not a question of progressives or conservatives. Everything open, even for an Italian Pope’
Cardinal Reinhard Marx predicts a short conclave for the election of Pope Francis’ successor. ‘In a few days we will arrive at the choice of the new Pope,’ said the German cardinal, one of Germany’s three electors, meeting the media in Rome on the day of the Pontiff’s funeral.
Marx stressed the importance of listening to ‘the sentiment of God’s people’, which cardinals cannot ignore. ‘The Church is at the service of the people,’ he recalled, rejecting the idea of being a “kingmaker” and reiterating that he is simply “a member of the College of Cardinals”.
As for the possibility that an Italian might ascend to the throne of Peter, the cardinal remarked: ‘Everything is open’. According to Marx, it is not a matter of an opposition between progressives and conservatives, but of finding a credible figure capable of dialogue and communication with the world. ‘The new Pope will have to move in the groove traced by Francis, conveying the centrality of the Gospel with a global vision’.
