Across Germany, thousands of people demonstrated against the AfD and its possible ally the CDU, to defend democracy and civil rights
Today, 9 February 2025, numerous demonstrations took place in Germany against the extreme right and the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. After yesterday’s demonstration in Munich, where more than 200,000 people took part in a march entitled ‘Democracy Needs You’, organised by the ‘Munich in Colour’ network, there were also marches and rallies against the extreme right in various German cities today. A significant demonstration was also held in Berlin, with more than 250,000 participants, which crossed the streets of the German capital, starting from the Bundestag to the CDU headquarters, the Adenauer Haus. The demonstrators expressed concern about the possible collaboration between the CDU and the AfD, especially regarding migration policies.
Other German cities such as Bremen, Hanover, Giessen and Rostock hosted similar marches and demonstrations, with tens of thousands of people participating. In Heidenheim, Baden-Württemberg, around 4,000 people demonstrated against the AfD at a campaign event with Chancellor candidate Alice Weidel.
These demonstrations reflect a growing mobilisation of German civil society against the rise of the far-right and the AfD, with the aim of defending democratic principles and opposing policies considered divisive.
