Ursula von der Leyen is recovering from pneumonia
European Commission President Teresa Ribera has been delegated to take her place until her expected return on 20 January
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, is recovering from pneumonia at her home in Hannover, but will not attend this week’s College. This was announced by the chief spokeswoman of the EU executive, Paula Pinho, during the press briefing. Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera has been asked to take over until von der Leyen’s return, expected on 20 January, when she is expected to attend the World Economic Forum events in Davos and the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg.
Pinho also reassured that the president has never been admitted to intensive care or on a respirator, while still maintaining her operations, including dialogue with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The spokeswoman also promised updates on her health, after the press raised doubts about her office’s transparency regarding last week’s hospitalisation.
