New violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo between the army and the armed group M23, backed by Rwanda
Fighting in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, has left more than 100 people dead and nearly 1,000 injured, according to a tally based on data provided by local hospitals and collected by Afp. The situation remains dramatic, with many bodies still lying in the streets of the city.
‘Many bodies are still in the city and must be recovered as soon as possible,’ said a doctor contacted by Afp, emphasising the severity of the consequences of the clashes.
The clashes involve the Congolese army and the M23 armed group, backed by Rwandan forces, in an escalation of violence that has further aggravated the already fragile situation in the region. The international community is watching with concern, but the response on the ground still seems far from offering a lasting solution to the conflict.
