Thompson murder: the tragic story of Luigi Mangione and the drama of an entire family

The 26-year-old Italian-American arrested for the murder of Brian Thompson had led a life marked by psychological and physical difficulties. His desperate family had been searching for him for months

Luigi Mangione, an engineering graduate from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, led a life that on the surface seemed promising, but in reality concealed deep psychological suffering. For the past two years after graduation, he had given up a well-paying job and retreated to Hawaii, hoping to find answers through travel and meditation. On Reddit, he shared his torments, talking about a growing sense of mental and physical disorientation that had accompanied him since adolescence.

Mangione had begun to seek relief from his problems, including an addiction to his smartphone and social media, which had isolated him further. His physical health, already compromised, had deteriorated during his university years, mainly due to a traumatic experience in a fraternity that had aggravated his sleep cycle and symptoms of ‘brain fog’, a disorder that made him unable to cope with daily life.

The Mangione family in apprehension

Luigi Mangione’s case took a tragic turn. His family, who had not heard from him, experienced months of uncertainty. His mother Kathy, in particular, tried desperately to track down her son, sending emails to friends and seeking help through social media. Despite a few attempts at contact, including a message on X from a friend asking if he was OK, the family received no response. After reporting him missing to the San Francisco Police Department in November, Kathy discovered that Luigi had begun to isolate himself even more, cutting off all communication.

The trip to Asia and the final silence

In 2023, Mangione had decided to embark on a long trip to Asia, via Thailand and Japan. During his stay in Nara, he spoke enthusiastically about the beauty of the surrounding nature and his desire to devote himself to meditation. But on 25 May, Mangione’s Reddit account published his last post, in which he shared a video on a subreddit dedicated to Ted Kaczynski, before disappearing into thin air.

The silence that followed lasted for months. It was not until November that the family reported him missing, but in the meantime Mangione had embarked on a bus trip to New York City. A few weeks later, the police arrested Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on charges of the murder of Brian Thompson.

A tragic and mysterious ending

The tragic twist in this case came with Mangione’s arrest, but it remains a mystery what drove the young man to commit such a serious crime. His story, marked by psychological and physical difficulties, raises questions about the causes that can lead an individual to isolate himself from the world, and perhaps, to commit irreparable acts.
