Georgia: predictable result, Mikheil Kavelashvili elected President
His election is disputed. The Electoral College vote was boycotted by the opposition, which denounces the illegitimacy of the election
Mikheil Kavelashvili, a former footballer supported by the ruling ‘Georgian Dream’ party, was elected president of Georgia by the Electoral College, with 224 votes out of 300 members. However, the opposition denounced the election as illegitimate, as they did not participate in the vote and refused to recognise the validity of the process.
The outgoing president, Salomé Zourabishvili, called the vote ‘illegitimate’ and refused to leave office, fuelling political tensions in the country.
