Democratic Republic of Congo, mysterious disease: WHO suspects respiratory pathogen
The World Health Organisation investigates a series of deaths caused by an as yet unidentified disease
An unknown disease is causing several deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has sent a team of experts to investigate. The WHO suspects that a respiratory pathogen, such as influenza or Covid-19, may be the cause, but laboratory tests are also underway to explore other hypotheses, including malaria and measles.
At the moment, the exact cause remains unidentified and WHO awaits the results of the tests to clarify the situation. ‘We will share further information as it becomes available,’ the UN agency said.
