Without an agreement on the spending bill, non-essential federal activities would be shut down: hundreds of thousands of workers suspended or without pay, services at risk

US government shutdown: deadline Wednesday – A shutdown looms in the United States: on Wednesday, without the approval of the spending bill or a stopgap measure, non-essential government activities would be shut down immediately. Provided for by the Antideficiency Act, the measure would suspend hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay, although back pay would be guaranteed after an agreement is reached.

Impact on workers and services

Workers in sectors deemed essential – healthcare, defense, law enforcement, air traffic control – will have to continue to work without pay. The last US government shutdown, between 2018 and 2019, lasted 35 days, causing flight delays and slowdowns in airport security checks. Even now, the Transportation Security Administration fears absences and queues, while national parks and federal museums would close as they did in 2013.

Political clash between Republicans and Democrats

The standoff in Congress is total. Democrats are calling for measures to extend Obamacare, restore funds for foreign aid and public broadcasters to be included in the package. Republicans, with their majority, are only aiming for a bridge law, accusing their opponents of wanting to shift the responsibility for the US government shutdown onto them.
